More than 20 million people call Cairo their home and, as soon as you set foot in the sprawling metropolis, it's evident they make it crowded and chaotic, but also exuberant and charming.
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities and Pyramids of Giza are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Head to Khan Al-Khalili and Oum El Dounia Galleryfor plenty of shopping. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Cairo: Step Pyramid of Djoser (in Saqqara) and Great Sphinx (in Giza). There's still lots to do: wander the streets of Coptic Cairo, take in the spiritual surroundings of Mosque of Muhammad Ali, head off the coast to Zamalek (Gezira Island), and view the masterpieces at Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Centre.
