A historic city with its eye firmly on the future, Tallinn blends medieval fortifications, gleaming skyscrapers, and charming boutiques with a spattering of Soviet relics.

Nuremberg, Germany to Tallinn is an approximately 7-hour flight. You can also drive; or do a combination of train and bus. The time zone changes from Central European Standard Time (CET) to Eastern European Standard Time (EET), which is usually a 1 hour difference. Traveling from Nuremberg in August, expect nights in Tallinn to be about the same, around 13°C, while days are little chillier, around 24°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 20th (Fri) early enough to drive to Sigulda.

You can drive from Tallinn to Sigulda in 4.5 hours. Other options are to fly; or take a train. In August, plan for daily highs up to 26°C, and evening lows to 16°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 23rd (Mon) so you can drive to Riga.

Often referred to as "The Paris of the North," Riga offers thriving nightlife and some of the best collections of Art Nouveau architecture in Europe.

You'll find plenty of places to visit near Riga: Salaspils Memorial Ensemble (in Salaspils) and Jomas iela (in Jurmala). You can drive from Sigulda to Riga in 1.5 hours. Other options are to take a train; or take a bus. August in Riga sees daily highs of 26°C and lows of 16°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 28th (Sat) so you can drive to Vilnius.

The capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, boasts an impressive medieval quarter--one of the continent's largest and a World Heritage Site with almost 2,000 historical buildings.

Step out of Vilnius to go to Trakai and see Trakai Island Castle Museum, which is approximately 36 minutes away. The adventure continues: take an in-depth tour of Gediminas Castle Tower, take a stroll through Vilnius Old Town, visit Uzupis, and see the interesting displays at Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.

You can drive from Riga to Vilnius in 4 hours. Other options are to fly; or take a bus. In August in Vilnius, expect temperatures between 27°C during the day and 14°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 1st (Wed) early enough to drive to Kaunas.

Situated between the Neris and Nemunas rivers, Kaunas is known for its old town, which, though smaller than the capital's, is in much better condition.

Start off your visit on the 2nd (Thu): take a stroll through Old Town Kaunas, step into the grandiose world of Kaunas Castle, see the interesting displays at Kaunas City Museum Folk Music Branch, then contemplate the long history of Ninth Fort, and finally see the interesting displays at National M.
