Explore the high brown walls and various entrances of The Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), a landmark building of the Old Town and a popular tourist destination. Featuring crenelated stone battlements with upright merlons, embrasures, and entrances with pointed arches, the fort with its inner courtyard has been converted into a cultural center dotted with curio shops. Built by the Omanis as a defense against the Portuguese in the 17th century, this remains the oldest standing structure in the Stone Town. Buy some tingatinga paintings and traditional handicrafts from the shops, or watch a performance in the fort's open-air amphitheater. • I thought this fort had so much potential, but is under utilized and developed. It is free to get in, so that is a plus. Make sure you visit the art gallery in one of the turrets to get a good view...  more »

  • The Old Fort so named now was built in 1699 by Omani Arabs after expelling the Portuguese. It silently spells out it glorious past. Amphitheatre was added in 1990s. It is one of important tourist attractions in Stone Town, Zanzibar. There are many other historical places to visit in Stone Town, Zanzibar.Good luck.
  • The Old Fort gives one a glimpse of what the Island must have been like during the time of its colonial occupation. The structure has a history onto its own, and is well worth visiting to gain a thorough overall insight into the earlier life of this great Island. Also, of course, it makes for beautiful pictures!
