Trip Planner: Europe / Portugal / Central Portugal / Lisbon District / Lisbon / Museu Calouste Gulbenkian
Marvel at the extraordinary range of artworks on display at Museu Calouste Gulbenkian. Formed from the private collection of Ottoman-born oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian (of which only about one-sixth remains on permanent exhibition), the museum houses treasures spanning East and West and including Egyptian relics, Chinese porcelain, Western masterpieces, and everything in between. After browsing the galleries of paintings, jewelry, furniture, sculptures, and more, take a stroll in the landscaped park in which the museum resides. Museu Calouste Gulbenkian Reviews
Magnifique collection du fondateur, mais à voir également la collection moderne nichée au milieu du jardin. more »Magnificent collection of the founder, but also to see the modern collection nestled in the middle of the garden.
Surprised by the extensive collection of art, artifacts and furniture from around the world once in a private collection. Spans from Egypt to Europe more »
I went to both the modern and traditional art museum and I enjoyed both. The modern section is the perfect size in my opinion, it only takes about 20-30 minutes to look at everything. The traditional section takes more like an hour because there is so much (maybe too much) to look at. But there are some very famous pieces/artists in the traditional museum, so it's a must see. Both are free on Sunday after 2pm. Walk around the park before or after seeing the museums too, it is beautiful.
Great Museum of both Modern and the personal collection of Calouste Gulbenkian. CG was during his life time the richest man alive and has amounted to a number of reliques throughout his years. His personal collection is not only a trip in history but a statement to what was the most valuable during his lifetime. The modern Art museum focus on the last century of art in Europe but mainly Portugal. A wonderful history class it provokes the viewer into understanding what has happened in the socioeconomic scenario of Portugal and how artists reacted to it. Total approximate time of the exposition around 90-180 minutes depending on your thoroughness. Accompanied to the museum's is a superb outside landscape that doubles as a public park during the weekends. You can expect to find plenty of tourists and locals about enjoying a sunny afternoon or the outside pieces the Museum's displaces. Overall a great experience for families and art enthusiasts alike.
