KGB Museum (Genocido Auku Muziejus), Vilnius

4.4
#2 of 42 in Museums in Vilnius
Housed in the former headquarters of the Soviet Union's notorious security service, KGB Museum (Genocido Auku Muziejus) documents the tactics of the secret police and memorializes the victims. Though Lithuania was a part of the USSR until its independence in 1990, its forcible incorporation into the country in 1940 led to a great deal of resentment and resistance against Russia. Visit the museum to see a multitude of exhibits displaying personal items of victims of the 50-year occupation who were killed in this very building. Don't miss the prison here, where many of the most ghastly abuses were carried out. Keep in mind that, due to the brutal subject matter, the museum may not be suitable for young children. • I didn’t expect such a wide exposition at all. There’s a prison , really good set up, you can see exactly how inmates had to stay in the prison - their rooms, bathrooms, out yard, and even execution.....  more »
  • A must for ALL visitors to appreciate the trauma and pain that this lovely country has been through in the past. It’s cheap to enter and you can easily spend a couple of hours reading and absorbing...  more »

  • Fantastic exhibition. Not expensive to visit (€4) and there's so much information to take in. The ground floor and upper floor take you through the Soviet occupations of Lithuania and the underground resistance (forest brothers). There's also a large section focusing on the work of the KGB. In the basement there is the former KGB prison, which is quite shocking to see.
  • Amazing. Possibly the best museum I have seen in a long time. It is very educative - we learnt so many things about history which helped better understand the country. Coming from Western Europe, this historical period is always thought from a different perspective. It was very informative. Some of the images are hard, probably not for everyone.
