Cathedral (Arkikatedra Bazilika), Vilnius

4.4
Cathedral (Arkikatedra Bazilika) represents the center of Catholic faith in Lithuania and serves as one of Vilnius' most notable buildings, particularly since it is also the resting place of the country's patron saint, St. Casimir. Built in 1783, the cathedral underwent a period of renewal after Lithuania's independence and nowadays has been restored to its former glory. Its entrance, complete with massive columns, statues, and a tower, dominates the surrounding square. Explore the cavernous interior of the church, decorated with carved-stonework ceilings, moldings, and murals. View the metal tomb of St. Casimir, one of the centerpieces of the structure. Don't miss the chance to visit the underground chapels, dedicated to different figures and a site of worship dating back further than the building itself. Here you have the opportunity to see the oldest surviving fresco in Lithuania. Make Cathedral (Arkikatedra Bazilika) part of your personalized Vilnius itinerary using our Vilnius trip website.

  • Another beautiful cathedral right in the middle of Vilnius. Outside looks impressive but inside it is just devine.  more »
  • Very nice architecture and in the center of the city. Easy to access and walk around. Close to other city attractions.  more »

  • The location, on the main square, is nice. The cathedral itself is plain. Supposedly it has some nice "catacombs", but haven't managed to visit them yet, so can't comment in them
  • Although from the outside it doesn’t look like the most impressive of cathedrals there’s a lot of beauty when you get up close. Intricate carvings on the ceiling and statues on the adjacent walls are worth taking a few moments to discover up close. The square outside gives plenty of space to admire the building from every angle and the clock tower makes it even more unique against other cities. It’s a relaxing spot, great for photos with the castle hill in the background, and any visit to the city wouldn’t be complete without a visit.
