Originally constructed as part of the Kaunas Fortress, Ninth Fort now serves as a museum dedicated to the atrocities committed here during the Soviet and Nazi occupations, and to its past role as an important stronghold. The building of the fort began in 1902 and was not completed until the night before the outbreak of World War I. Throughout the Soviet period of 1940 to 1941, the fort was used to house political prisoners before shipping them off to Siberia. During the Holocaust, it served as a place of mass murder, with over 30,000 Jews and 10,000 foreigners being executed here, in what came to be known as the Kaunas Massacre. Visit the memorial located on the grounds and pay your respects to the victims who died here. Learn more about the events that took place in the fort through the museum exhibits, displaying artifacts and historical records. It is historical place, museum. This place was funded, and built by the Russian Czar as a guarding tower with the secret tunnels, then was used as a concentration camp by Nazis to kill war... more »
Very interesting exhebition. However, these "guards" watching every single step made me feel a bit like an inmate. One of them even turned off the artillery sound simulator, after I tried it out, giving me a look, that could kill. Rest was all good, so still four stars.
Definitely worth seeing. A lot of history. The place is big and it takes quite a while to walk trough all the rooms. There are 2 buildings - first with amazing glass work, art pieces and photos; second is the place where you can see the cells, prisoners things and have a look at how they lived, where they slept, etc.
