Dating back to the Neolithic period, The Citadel shows archaeological evidence of use and occupation by numerous fallen empires. Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad ruins dot the site, located in the middle of downtown Amman. Highlights include a temple to Hercules, with remains of a massive statue of the god and a domed Umayyad palace. The Citadel reviews
A fantastic place to visit especially near the end of the day. I was there last week and it was practically empty. Guides at the entrance try to entice you to hire but they are not persistent. Rather.... more »
The citadel was constructed over time and is located on top of the highest hill in Amman. The site is extensive with many things to see. Take water with you if you are going in the afternoon... more »
A beautiful place in the city of Amman to spend time with friends and family and enjoy the beautiful view of the whole city of Amman. As a tourist from India where History of old civilizations are a part of every corner...visiting Amman Citadel was yet another experience of witnessing the site which holds the history of being inhabited by a varied number of civilizations continuously. Viewing the ruins of the Temple of Hercules was breathtaking. Though not much is left still the ruins were enough to take us back to our school days reading the stories of Hercules. The view of the Roman Theatre is one of the best views from this place. This place also has a nice cafeteria near the entrance for refreshments.
For a few JD, you get a wonderful glance into history and beautiful views of the city. (Also included in Jordan Pass.) Several stunning structures, lots of explanations on plaques (in English, too) and a very cool vibe overall. Definitely worth making the trek. Just be careful outside if you want a ride back down the hill; the taxis will *severely* overcharge tourists. It shouldn't cost more than a few JD.
