Beautiful place. One of the major attractions and must visit places in Milan.
I knew of the existence of this church, incorporated in the Grand Palace of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, but I've never been able to visit her; in the year (excluding summer) only opens for the following functions: on weekdays, the mass is at 13.10; on holidays, the morning is "occupied" by eritrea, who recently replaced the Japanese one). After several "steps" I found open at 12.30 and I entered. It's a small church, which is accessed by overcoming cancelled three-arched entrance of the Palace of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo and going through an atrium (defaced from the cage that once housed the keeper); built in the first half of the eighteenth century according to the project of ing. Antonio Paintings (or Quadrio), has an octagonal (with two side chapels and a deep chancel, octagonal, too) and is covered by a high dome with lantern and big Windows; very bright. At the center of the presbytery, a wealthy (and beautiful) altar, embellished with rare marbles, precious stones and golden bronze with a beautiful Carrara marble relief depicting the Annunciation: Archangel Gabriele and the Virgin, on both sides, I'm overwhelmed from the eternal father and by the angels. The work was carried out around the middle of the sixteenth century to the bezel of the side door of the Cathedral and then amended around 1570 on signs-fire of Pellegrino Tibaldi; This image is linked, according to historian Serviliano Lattuada (author of a fundamental work for the historical knowledge of Milan: Milan Description: adorned with many designs in copper of larger factories, which are located in this metropolis, published In 1737-1738), the miracle of "instantaneous healing of a cripple. In front of this impressive altar, in 1972, in observance of the liturgical reform, the new altar was erected facing the people, which-of course-changing the perception of the Church. The side altars are dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua (left altar) and in Saint Lucia, the patron of stonemasons and – by extension – for all those who work for the venerable factory; There are shovels of anonymous lombardi of the 18th century; in the altar on the right, also a shovel which depicts the martyrdom of Saints Nabor and Felix and Felice. There is placed above the entrance, a large pipe organ of 1920. The Church is dedicated to santa Maria Annunciata (santa Maria Assunta, as reported by some sources) in the cemetery, as the Chapel, built in 1399, stood in the graveyard area at the back of the Cathedral (the cemetery remained in use until February 1661) today occupied by this building. In the mid-1800 the Church was incorporated into the monumental Palace where the architect Pietro Pestagalli was to reunite the marble deposits, workshops, warehouses, shops and offices of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, the entity that was involved in the construction and then maintenance and restoration of the Cathedral in Milan, amassing the necessary funds and managing directors. Died the designer in 1853, the work was completed (in 1866) by his son – the architect Giuseppe Pestagalli; at the conclusion of the construction was placed on top of the building and in line with the central axis, the watch designed by architect Giuseppe Vandoni, which was to be the modern version of the old who, on a tower, it marked the hours of work the construction of the Cathedral (the Church was called santa Maria Relogii or santa Maria). The clock was soon flanked by two statues representing the day, a young man who covers his eyes to protect them from the Sun, and at night, a woman asleep; the statues were made by Luigi Buzzi Leone and Abbondio Sangiorgio, sculptors who, at the time, were much appreciated (Sangiorgio is author of bronze chariot that crowns the Arco della Pace). In short, a beautiful church, not in perfect condition (there are obvious water stains on the Dome), hidden inside a beautiful building; all with a very interesting story!
