The museum was originally founded in Ravenna in 1988 by Raffaello Biagetti and co-curated by Giovanni Klaus Koenig, Filippo Alison and Giuseppe Chigiotti with the clear goal of telling the story of the birth and evolution of one of the most important cultural and social phenomena of the last century: Design.
MUSEO DEL DESIGN 1880-1980 aims to represent the most crucial moments of the evolution of Italian and International industrial product design, highlighting nuances and contrasts through the different experiences that have generated contemporary design. The collection, was put together and curated with the clear aim of creating a sound didactic tool to teach the history and development of the sector and to guide the visitor on an imaginary voyage through the evolution of creativity applied to objects. The efforts of the founder and co-curators were strengthened by the help and vision of great names such as Dino Gavina, Ettore Sottsass, Ignazio Gardella and many other authors, who contributed to the realization of a “theatrical museum” where every stage is a scene, a chapter in a book, able to generate a consistent and unbiased vision, chronological and accurate in its references to the most important protagonists of world design.
Now, thanks to the vision of Musei Italiani, this collection has been brought to Milan for the duration of EXPO 2015 so that the greater public, both Italian and International can appreciate and learn from this unique museum experience.
Museo del Design 1880-1980 Reviews
We saw a very good exposition on migration here. It was an eye opener from different perspectives of immigration. The design part was less spectacular but a nice walkthrough though. more »
If you pass the building and see the way it is advertised you expect a museum where you can actually spend time while getting to know some more detailed information about the different objects. Well..... more »
I am passionate about design and this place is like the design Hall of Fame! I found the exhibition extremely moving - you can really feel the historical importance of the pieces and imagine the lives lived around them. Near the metro in the canal district so good for an after-museum drink or nibble. Definitely worth a visit.
They have amazing objects, but I think that 10€ is too steep for what you get. I actually paid 8€, no idea why, but there was a discount on a Friday. Still 5€ would be a fair price for what you get. Not a lot of information about the objects, just about the movements and periods in time.
