Considered one of the city’s masterpieces of modern architecture, Milano Centrale is served by high-speed and conventional train lines, with connections to most major European cities. Designed by architect Ulisse Stacchini, the station opened in 1931, replacing the old 19th-century transit station that could no longer handle the traffic caused by the opening of the Simplon tunnel in 1906. Today, over 300,000 passengers pass through the station every day, using about 500 daily trains. The station is connected to the city’s main airport through a convenient express train service. You can get any necessary supplies for your trip at the supermarket and a few smaller shops located on the western side of the station’s basement. Pickpockets loitering around the main station building are known to target tourists at night, so pay attention to your bags.
