Rock of Cashel, Cashel

Local mythology claims Rock of Cashel, a limestone hill crowned by a group of medieval buildings, came into existence when Saint Patrick banished Satan from a cave in a nearby mountain. Kings of Munster lived here for several centuries before the Norman invasion, adding structures to fortify their hilltop seat of power. Little structural evidence of that time remains, as the oldest building still standing on the rock is a round tower constructed sometime in the 12th century. Next to the tower stands a Romanesque chapel, Gothic cathedral, and a 15th century castle. Before you stroll here from the town of Cashel, check the website for a downloadable leaflet providing a brief history and a map of this historical site. • €4.50 for parking. €8 entrance guided tour fee for general admission and €11 to also see inside the chapel. There are so many spectacular views of the castle and its surroundings - inside and out. It was enjoyable to learn about the castle and surroundings from our knowledgeable tour guide. A must see! The village is quaint and nice to visit and eat. It was a lovely day!
  • The BEST landmark of Ireland for me. Full of history, blood, ravens and beauty, this ruin is perfect for a guided tour around it. I loved every second of listening the tour guide. I suggest taking both of the tours as they are cheap and hope you get good weather! Definately recommend this one!
