Trip Planner: Europe / Greece / Central Macedonia / Thessaloniki Region / Thessaloniki / Arch of Galerius
One of the city's most important and intriguing landmarks, the remains of Arch of Galerius provide a glimpse into Greece's long and fascinating history. The triumphal structure was built in the 4th century and today three of the eight pillars survive along with the masonry cores of the arches. Roman Emperor Galerius commissioned the monument to celebrate his victory over the Persians, and to this day you can witness scenes of the war on the remaining marble slabs. Spend some time interpreting the depictions and soak up the lively atmosphere of this popular meeting spot. There are a number of bars, restaurants, and tourist attractions in the area. Arch of Galerius reviews
While the arch itself is incredible, and while remaining sculpted areas are a sight to admire, we were turned off by the poor signage. The two descriptive panels were not well kept. They seems to be..... more »
Stopping for a few moments here on our walk around, the place was full of locals. The arch was full of pigeons. I recommend to check it by day and by night, too because the arch beautifully lit at... more »
One of the most known touristic monuments in Thessaloniki. Its presence state that the entire city used to be a gigantic fortress for people inside but a gigantic fortress for enemies as well. It is located in the heart of Thessaloniki providing breathtaking photos to anyone who wanna learn what it was like back then. An amazing sighting , a well preserved one by the locals.
This is indeed a Monumental structure in every sense. It marked the intersection where the street that linked the Galerius Palace and the Roman Rotunda crossed over the Via Egnatia, the Roman road linking the Adriatic coast to Constantinople (Istanbul). The fact that Galerius designed the Via Egnatia to go straight through the city of Thessaloniki demonstrates the importance that he attributed to the city. The part of the Arch that still exists today gives a very good flavour for what the full archway must have looked like... In a word, magnificent. Take a close look at the carvings in the marble facade. They depict some of the many wars that Emperor Galerius waged. These ones primarily relate to his battles with the Persians. Given that they are more than 1700 years old, they are in superb condition. It is a shame that the original complete Arch no longer exists but what remains is wonderful. This was made to impress and it does.
