Saxony-Anhalt is a fairly young federal state, created in 1946. Nevertheless, it is home to more World Heritage-listed attractions than any other state in Germany. The region notably contains Wittenberg and Eisleben, two cities boasting a close connection to historically significant events in the life of Protestant reformer Martin Luther. The region includes a variety of landscapes from the southwestern Harz Mountains to the sprawling northern plains. It features some of the most fertile soils in the country, and was inhabited as far back as the Bronze Age.
