One of the world's elite parks, Zoo Leipzig opened in 1878 and now has nearly 850 different animal species. The zoo prides itself on its collection of big cats and its enormously successful breeding program. The internationally renowned enclosures and exhibits resemble real, wild habitats. Wind your way through six different regions: the Founder's Garden, Gondwanaland, Asia, Pongoland, Africa, and South America. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. The 22.7 hectare (56 acre) zoo's efforts toward authenticity mean the walking paths are often made of sand or soil. Zoo Leipzig reviews
We loved the layout of the zoo, it was well thought out with a good selection of animals on show and good facilities. However the zoo was much too crowded with no consideration for social distancing.... more »
Not good at all there are so few animals and they are all hiding I don’t know why they won’t l people to get closer to some of save animals more »
Zoo Leipzig is a fun place for the entire family. The entire zoo is very kid friendly - highly interactive, hands-on and accessible. There are kids' play areas and a petting zoo. The animals are housed in environments that try to replicate their natural habitat, for the most part. The zoo is a bit old and shabby looking, but easy to navigate and not overly large. Although most animals are housed humanely, there are a few exhibits where larger animals are kept alone and may be bored or stressed. Overall, though, this zoo is a very positive experience. Do not miss the African exhibits! Food and beverages are available for purchase on site, and there is a large souvenir shop before the exit door (best of luck leaving the shop without making a purchase, if you have young children!). Reduced admission tickets are available for purchase three hours before closing, but bear in mind that you will need at least three hours to see all of the exhibits, and, if you have small children, probably four or five hours. Please note that most signage and descriptions are primarily in German, and some staff may not converse in English. Highly recommended.
Beautiful zoo with so many animals to see. You should definitely plan in a whole day when visiting the zoo. For kids, there are not just the animals but also some really cool and fun playgrounds which are designed in different ways. If you become hungry there are many different places to eat as well. Lots of things to do!
