St. Thomas Church (Thomaskirche) is most famous for being the resting place of composer Johann Sebastian Bach. It's also where he worked as a choir director. Reformer Martin Luther preached here on Pentecost Sunday in 1539. Today, it is a Lutheran church. In the sanctuary, study the portraits of superintendents of Leipzig. The oldest dates back to 1614. Note the stained-glass windows. One is a portrait of Bach, and another is Felix Mendelssohn. Outside the church, look for the statue of Bach.     You would have difficulty imagining that it had to be rebuilt after the war. Inside is fairly plain,but worth seeing. However, if you are in Leipzig on a Friday or Saturday, then there is a free(well....  more »

    In general, I am not a fan of visiting churches, even just for the sake of a beautiful view of their architecture, but I can not deny that this one, as I sometimes see in other places, looks good. In the old days they knew how to build a beautiful church. Modern "shiny boxes" didn't even stand next to that architecture.

    Well preserved and beautiful church, where Bach used to work. A must for classical music lovers, I was lucky enough to get into a concert inside. Awesome.
