Temple of Hathor at Dendera, Qena

#1 of 7 in Things to do in Qena Governorate
Impressive stone carvings and colorful hieroglyph depictions define Temple of Hathor at Dendera, one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt. The most stunning of the temples at Dendera on the Nile, this structure was built during the Ptolemaic period and was used until the Roman emperor Trajan at the beginning of the second millennia. See bright images of Cleopatra VI and her son but also depictions of Roman emperors alongside Egyptian gods. Once an ancient healing and fertility center, the temple was much visited then and still makes a popular tourist attraction due to its well-preserved colored reliefs. • A very unique Ptolemaic temple of Ancient Egypt. Nestled in the fields of Qena, it’s very peaceful and serene. In an exceptional condition, Dendera temple is a nice fusion between Egyptian and Hellenistic histories and art. If you are in Luxor it’s worth to pay a visit. A 75 minutes drive it’s fairly comfortable to make the trip
  • I saved this temple for last and I’m glad I did because it is by far the best one. It has a fully preserved roof, a lot of paint colors remaining, secret passageways and even roof access (the only temple that does). Highly recommend going in the morning when it opens (I had it entirely to myself from 0700-0800). My only complaint is that they don’t allow for flash photography or video but the guards smoke inside the temple.
