Basilica of the Holy Blood, Bruges

4.5
Basilica of the Holy Blood is best known for containing the relic of the Holy Blood, a cloth alleged to have Christ's blood on it. The relic dates to 1150, when Derrick of Alsace, the Count of Flanders, received the relic as a reward for his heroism during the second crusade. Built in the 12th century, this is the only Romanesque-style church in Bruges. The upper chapel has been renovated several times in a Gothic Revival style. Enter the lower chapel to view the ornate naves, sculptures, and relics dedicated to several saints. Climb the Renaissance-style staircase to the upper chapel, where you'll find the relic of the Holy Blood. • A fragment of cloth with the blood of Jesus displayed in a 13th Century perfume bottle, and housed in a small Basilica. Thousands of visitors / worhippers every month ! Worth visiting but left wonderi...  more »
  • Never seen a basilica so hidden (town hall square) and so beautiful both inside and outside. The interior is not very large but immediately at the entrance you can line up to observe the relic by stopping for a few moments in front of it and receiving a saint for remembrance. Don't miss it

  • This church is somewhat unassuming on the outside but quite grand one the inside. The art and just overall woodwork / stonework was very impressive. In particular I liked the art. We declined to see the artifact. They do, however, also have an artifacts room that we did pay to go see. It turns out to be only one room, and although the items they have in display are quite impressive, it seemed like a steep price to see one room. I don’t think it’s worth that price to see it, which is why I've put the rating down to average.
  • Beautiful little place with exciting history attached. Off course the prominent feature in a well known movie helps to attract people, but don’t come here just for that. There is more to it.
